CoDA, Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, and Codifi Inc.

Three organizations team up to explore possibilities for international exchange and increase impact of world heritage and archaeology.

Great news! These three organizations have started a collaboration through a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a cooperative relationship through mutual interests in the areas of digital technologies applied to archaeology and educational programs. The W. F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research is an American research center for ancient Near Eastern studies located in Jerusalem, Israel; CoDA – Center for Digital Archaeology is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting understanding and valuing of our common cultural heritage through digital technologies located in San Rafael, California, USA; and Codifi, Inc. is a California Benefit Corporation dedicated to innovating software development for digital heritage documentation and preservation.

This is the culmination of a long standing collaboration between all of us. The Albright Institute aims at developing and disseminating scholarly knowledge of the literature, history, and culture of the Near East, as well as the study of the development of civilization from prehistory to the early Islamic period. The Albright Institute annually provides a wide range of programs and facilities for doctoral and postdoctoral research, as well as information-sharing, internship and field work programs. CoDA’s mission is to design and realize innovative programs to document and share archaeological and historical collections, and to provide professional development for cultural heritage and cultural resource management. CoDA helps over 200 institutions and groups around the world to transform their scattered collections into integrated archives, and over 1500 archaeology professionals successfully adopt paperless workflows for their projects. Codifi, Inc, is a Benefit Corporation (B-Corp) focused solely on the development of innovative tools and technologies for paperless field recording.

We have collaborated on a number of great projects such as the Jezreel Valley Regional Project Excavations at Legio and Megiddo and the survey of the Jezreel Valley, and together have developed a state-of-the-art paperless workflow for excavation data as well as three-dimensional recording methods and techniques, now standard on all JVRP projects. The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to establish the mutual understandings between all of us, with respect to our joint efforts towards increasing our impact internationally, providing professional development and enrichment programs, and raising awareness of the benefits of archaeology and history to the public.

We intend to collaboratively pursue the following activities and goals:

  • To identify training needs and design classes and workshops dedicated to professional development for archaeologists. This activity will be part of an ongoing digital training program managed by CoDA;
  • To advertise and circulate news about each participant’s educational and research activities through mailing lists and social network channels;
  • To explore possibilities for international exchange of students and professionals;
  • To develop, promote and publish best practices for field archaeology digital documentation.

CoDA wishes to thank Matthew J. Adams, Director of the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research, and Michael Ashley, Founder and CEO of Codifi, Inc. for their trust, creativity and availability to start this new adventure that promises to bring much novelty and interesting synergies to all organizations’ affiliates.
